Dr. Gary Carlsen has been practicing Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in Huntington Beach since 1974. His undergraduate training was at the University of Southern California where he received an athletic and academic combined scholarship. During Dental School training, Dr. Carlsen became interested in Oral Surgery and became a member of the Marsh Robinson Study Club. He was one of two students selected in his Senior year to participte in a Cancer Training Fellowship at the Pasadena Tumor Institute and Los Angeles County Hospital where he received extensive general surgical experience and received medical pathological training. At Los Angeles County, USC Medical Center, he obtained extensive training in Inpatient and Outpatient General Anesthesia, Trauma, Orthognathic Surgery and the removal of wisdom teeth and other jaw procedures such as bone grafts,treatment of pathologic conditions and the placement of specialized implants.
Dr. Carlsen is a Diplomate and Fellow of the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons and was board certified as a Diplomateby the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons in 1979. Dr. Carlsen has served as President of the Orange County Dental Society, the Southern California Academy of Oral Pathology, the Southern California Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons and the Western Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons.Dr. Carlsen was inducted into the prestigious American College of Dentists in 2006 and is a member of the Pierre Fauchard Society as well as the Academy of Dentistry International. Dr.Carlsen has served as a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at USC Dental School and has taught numerous seminars on Oral Surgical topics. Dr. Carlsen has served as a State Board Anesthesia Evaluator since 1984. Dr. Carlsen is an Active Staff Member at Hoag Hospital, Newport Beach and has served as Chairman of the Department of Oral Surgery and Dentistry. Dr. Carlsen is a member of the Academy of Osseointegration, the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology as well as The Orange County Dental Society, the American Dental Association and the California Dental Association.
Dr. Carlsen attends numerous seminars, training courses and lectures globally to keep abreast of new treatment concepts that are applied to his practice and provided for his patients.
Dr.Carlsen was a proud member of the 1968 Olympic Team in Track and Field. He still holds the current record for Discus Throw at USC. He continues to enjoy an active lifestyle with his wife Anne; playing golf, scuba diving, fishing, and snow skiing. Dr. Carlsen also enjoys astrophotography, world travel, and spending time with his 3 grandchildren.
